Carbon Dioxide Fire Suppression

Carbon Dioxide Fire Suppression – The non–conductiveness of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) makes it an ideal fire extinguishant for electrical fires but it can also be used on other types of fires in the right circumstances including flammable liquids such as petrol, oil, diesel, and some solid fuels.

Carbon dioxide is similar to Novec 1230 in as much that it does not leave a residue behind like powder or foam extinguishants, which would be a problem for the delicate workings of an electronic appliance (download PDF).

These properties make carbon dioxide fire extinguishers particularly suitable for areas with a significant amount of electronic or electrical equipment. They should not be used on cooking oil fires as the high pressure discharge could splash the burning fat around and spread the fire further. Carbon Dioxide can be used as an alternative to Novec 1230 in some installations, but care must be taken in or around occupied areas.
